CBD hash: the short answer

CBD hash (or CBD resin) is a concentrate made from the trichomes of the hemp plant — those tiny resin glands that cover the flower and concentrate cannabinoids and terpenes. Denser and often more aromatic than the flower, it comes in several major families depending on how the trichomes are separated from the plant:

  • Dry sifting (dry sift / pollen): the trichomes are mechanically separated dry, then pressed. This is the method of the Moroccan tradition.
  • Pressed hash / static: the sifted pollen is compacted by hand or with a press to form soft blocks.
  • Ice-water extraction (Ice-O-Lator / bubble hash): the trichomes are detached in an ice-water bath, then filtered and dried.
  • Cold cure (Piatella style): a cold refining that yields a soft, creamy resin.
  • Dry frozen: a cold separation that preserves the most delicate aromas.

At Golden CBD, each family is represented by one or more resins, all tested in an independent laboratory. Here is how to tell them apart.

Pollen and dry sifting: the Moroccan tradition

Dry sifting (dry sift) is the historical hash method. The dried hemp buds are gently shaken or rubbed over sieves: the more fragile trichome heads detach and fall through the mesh to be collected as a powder — the pollen. This powder is then heated and pressed into plates or blocks. This technique has long been used in Morocco, Lebanon and Afghanistan.

The result is a dense, malleable resin with a warm, rustic bouquet: spicy, earthy and woody notes. Two Golden CBD resins embody this tradition: the Golden Ketama CBD, inspired by Moroccan hash with its spicy, earthy profile, and the Gibraltar CBD, with its Mediterranean character and woody, slightly spicy notes.

Pressed and static hash

Once the pollen is obtained, it is pressed — by hand, with heat, or with a press — to bind the trichomes into a compact, workable resin. Some modern variants use static electricity to separate the pollen even more finely from plant residue before pressing, giving a particularly clean hash.

The resulting texture is soft and easy to work between the fingers, gradually releasing its aromas. In our catalogue, the Lemon Hash CBD is a fine example with its bright aromatic profile dominated by citrus and fresh lemon, while the 4X CBD pushes the concentration to 55% CBD, with a woody, earthy and slightly spicy bouquet.

Ice-water extraction: the Ice-O-Lator

The Ice-O-Lator (also called bubble hash) relies on ice-water sifting. The flowers are immersed in an ice-water bath: the cold makes the trichomes brittle, and gentle agitation detaches them from the plant matter. The mixture is then filtered through a series of increasingly fine mesh bags (the bubble bags), which sort the trichomes by size. The wet resin is finally carefully dried.

This method preserves the purity and aromatic richness of the hemp. Our Ice-O-Lator CBD boasts a remarkable 41% CBD, with a texture ranging from sandy to crumbly depending on temperature and intense aromas with herbaceous, woody and slightly spicy notes. To fully understand this method, read our dedicated article: what is the Ice-O-Lator.

Cold cure: the Piatella style

Cold cure refers to a cold refining, carried out at low temperature to avoid degrading the most volatile terpenes. This approach yields resins with a soft, creamy, almost melting texture — that is the signature of the Piatella style, inspired by the Italian artisan tradition.

Our Piatella CBD is hand-pressed: its soft consistency works with the fingertips and reveals an earthy, vegetal bouquet punctuated by peppery and slightly spicy notes. To learn more about this resin and its style, see our guide: what is the Piatella.

Dry frozen

The dry frozen process relies on a cold separation of the trichomes, designed to preserve the most delicate compounds of the plant. The result is a clean resin with the crumbly, sandy texture typical of cold extractions, easy to work.

The Dry Frozen USA – 25% CBD perfectly illustrates this family: its nose is fresh and aromatic, with vegetal, herbaceous and slightly fruity notes preserved by the process. At 25% CBD, it offers a good balance between smoothness and character for discovering premium resins.

How to choose your CBD hash?

The choice depends above all on your aromatic preferences and your curiosity:

  • Do you like traditional, spicy and earthy profiles? Turn to dry sifting: Golden Ketama or Gibraltar.
  • Do you prefer fresh, fruity notes? The Lemon Hash and its citrus are for you.
  • Are you looking for a soft, creamy texture? The Piatella (cold cure) is ideal.
  • Do you want a powerful, refined resin? The Ice-O-Lator (41% CBD) or the 4X (55% CBD) will satisfy connoisseurs.
  • Are you new to resins? The Dry Frozen USA at 25% is a balanced starting point.

How to enjoy a CBD resin?

Whatever the family, a CBD resin is enjoyed in two main ways:

  • By vaporising at low temperature, which showcases the aromatic bouquet without degrading it.
  • As an infusion, accompanied by a fat (milk, cream, oil) to extract the cannabinoids.

Combustion is not recommended. Always store your resin away from light, heat and moisture, in an airtight container, to preserve its texture and aromas. To go further, see our guide how to consume CBD.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between pollen and hash?

Pollen is the trichome powder obtained by dry sifting; hash is that powder once heated and pressed into a block. Pollen is therefore an intermediate step toward pressed hash.

Is the Ice-O-Lator stronger than traditional hash?

The Ice-O-Lator concentrates the trichomes very finely, which often gives high CBD levels (41% for ours) and an intense aromatic profile. The perceived strength depends mainly on the CBD content and your preferences.

What is cold cure?

It is a refining at low temperature that limits the loss of volatile terpenes and gives a soft, creamy resin, like the Piatella.

Is CBD hash legal?

Yes: all our resins contain less than 0.3% THC, in accordance with European regulations, and are tested in an independent laboratory.

Does CBD hash get you high?

No. CBD is not psychoactive: it does not produce a high effect. Our resins are intended for wellness use.
