Ice-O-Lator: the hash extracted with ice water

Ice-O-Lator: the hash extracted with ice water

Ice-O-Lator is a hash extracted with ice water, without any chemical solvent. The principle: immerse the plant material in very cold water to harden the trichomes — the resin glands — then detach them with gentle agitation and collect them through a series of increasingly fine sieves. The water serves only as a transport medium, which makes this one of the purest extraction methods there is. Popularised in Amsterdam in the mid-1990s, often attributed to Mila Jansen and her Pollinator company, this technique gave rise to what is also called "bubble hash". In its hemp version, our Ice-O-Lator CBD takes the logic to its peak: a resin with 41% CBD, a sandy to crumbly texture and an intense aromatic bouquet, with less than 0.3% THC.

Origin and production: an Amsterdam invention

The story of Ice-O-Lator begins in Amsterdam in the 1990s. The ice-water extraction method was perfected and commercialised there by Mila Jansen's Pollinator Company — she is nicknamed "the queen of hash" — who developed nylon sieving bags with calibrated meshes. "Ice-O-Lator" is in fact originally the name of those bags, which by extension became the name of the hash they produce.

The process rests on a simple, elegant, entirely mechanical idea:

  • Cold hardens the trichomes: at low temperature, the resin glands become brittle, harder than the plant tissue that carries them.
  • Agitation detaches them: gentle stirring in ice water is enough to separate them from the plant, without heat or solvents.
  • Sieves sort them: the trichome-laden water passes through increasingly fine meshes (measured in microns); the intermediate meshes retain the purest trichome heads, while plant debris is set aside.

The result is then carefully dried. The nickname "bubble hash" comes from how quality extractions behave when heated: the resin bubbles instead of burning, a sign of great purity.

Texture and aromas: power and expressiveness

Ice-O-Lator concentrates the very fine resinous particles of hemp, and you can tell as soon as you open the jar. Our Ice-O-Lator CBD has a sandy to crumbly texture depending on temperature: cold, it crumbles finely; warmed between the fingers, it becomes more compact and slightly sticky.

On the aroma side, it is an expressive resin: herbal and woody notes dominate, lifted by a slightly spicy touch. The bouquet is released generously as soon as it is heated — the hallmark of ice-water extractions, which preserve the aromatic compounds that heat or solvents degrade elsewhere.

Ice-O-Lator, Piatella, traditional hash: what are the differences?

Not all resins are alike, and Ice-O-Lator occupies a very specific place:

  • Compared with traditional hash (dry-sifted then pressed), Ice-O-Lator is purer: ice-water sieving removes more plant matter and subjects the resin to neither heat nor intense pressure.
  • Compared with Piatella, the kinship is direct: both start from the same ice-water extraction. But where Ice-O-Lator is dried and keeps its sandy to crumbly texture, Piatella continues with cold vacuum curing ("cold cure") that makes it creamy and buttery. Ice-O-Lator is, in a way, the father of Piatella.

How to enjoy an Ice-O-Lator CBD?

A resin of this purity deserves methods that respect its aromas:

  • Low-temperature vaporisation is ideal: it showcases the herbal, woody bouquet without burning it. Its crumbly texture makes dosing easy.
  • Infusion with a fatty base (whole milk, coconut oil) allows a gentle, gradual tasting.
  • Combustion is not recommended: it destroys precisely the aromatic compounds that ice-water extraction took such care to preserve.

Store the resin in an airtight container, cool, dry and away from light. All the methods are detailed in our guide how to consume CBD.

FAQ: your questions about Ice-O-Lator

What exactly is Ice-O-Lator?

It is a hash extracted with ice water and sieves, without solvents: cold hardens the trichomes, gentle agitation detaches them and fine meshes collect them. It is also called bubble hash.

Are Ice-O-Lator and bubble hash the same thing?

Yes, in common usage. "Ice-O-Lator" originally refers to the sieving bags of Amsterdam's Pollinator Company; "bubble hash" comes from the fact that a pure extraction bubbles when heated instead of burning.

Is Ice-O-Lator CBD legal?

Yes. Our Ice-O-Lator CBD contains less than 0.3% THC, in accordance with European regulations, and every batch is tested by an independent laboratory.

What is the difference between Ice-O-Lator and Piatella?

The same ice-water extraction at the start, but Ice-O-Lator is dried and keeps a sandy to crumbly texture, while Piatella is cold-cured under vacuum until it becomes creamy and buttery.

How should Ice-O-Lator CBD be consumed?

Through low-temperature vaporisation to preserve the aromas, or as an infusion with a fatty base. Combustion is not recommended.
